Project Overview

The Streetcar East Extension project connects the downtown area and runs along Edgewood Avenue to the Atlanta BeltLine at Irwin Street and up to Ponce de Leon Avenue. This project aims to improve urban mobility and meet the growing greater Atlanta region’s mobility needs through:
  • New stops to key destinations
  • Accessible accommodations for limited-mobility users
  • Sustainable design principles
  • Partnerships with local communities
Continued coordination between MARTA, the City of Atlanta, and Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. will advance the project forward through aligned transportation goals and detailed planning and design work.

Project Goals and Benefits

The project supports the greater Atlanta region’s mobility vision for a convenient, equitable, and accessible transit system.
Project benefits include:
  •   Five new stops on the Streetcar East Extension:
    1. Edgewood at Boulevard
    2. Auburn at Irwin
    3. Highland-Freedom
    4. Ralph McGill
    5. Ponce de Leon
  • Affordable fare options with the current, one-day pass costing $3 or a one-way trip for an adult costing $1.
  • ADA compliant and supports limited-mobility users’ access to key destinations.
  • Last-mile connectivity with fast, frequent service.
  • One-seat transit rides between the Eastside BeltLine corridor and downtown.
  • Sustainable design principles like rain gardens, permeable pavements, and energy-efficient lighting.
  • Accommodates for the greater Atlanta’s future growth.
The project will focus on developing the extension with the current and future community in mind. Public participation will play an important role in the Streetcar East Extension’s advancement.

Project Updates

As of May 2024, the project’s design is 30% complete and includes plans for the extension to feature five stations along its route. MARTA has engaged HDR, a global engineering firm, to complete the final design – which will last approximately two years.
The design phase will focus on equitable transportation solutions and will carefully consider the potential impact on adjacent properties, utilities, operational requirements, and neighborhood accessibility. Once the final design is complete, construction will begin, and the service will welcome the first passengers in 2028.

Community and Stakeholder Engagement

MARTA plans to engage neighborhoods, Neighborhood Planning Units (NPUs), community organizations, and other community hubs throughout the final design and construction phase to garner valuable feedback about the project. These efforts will ensure the project’s well-aligned with the City of Atlanta, the Atlanta BeltLine, Inc., MARTA, and the community’s transportation and development goals.
Upcoming engagement in the final design phase will include topics such as:
Station design & urban design
Public art
  • Property-specific design impacts
  • Business impact mitigation
  • Construction communication planning
Community and stakeholder engagement plays an integral role in the Streetcar East Extension project’s advancement and success. MARTA hopes to foster a transparent and inclusive process that encourages public participation and input.
